Types of Motor Oil for Your Car Engine

There are different types of motor oil which perform different jobs for your car engine. There are several factors which constitute the type of oil you need. To find the right oil for your car engine, you will need to learn about the oil additives, viscosity ratings, and classification codes.

What are oil additives?

Oil additives are the added elements in the oil which help in keeping your engine cool, and clean. The additives blend in with the oil to safeguard your engine from any corrosive damage. The additives can charge up to 25 per cent of the cost of the oil.

What is viscosity?

The viscosity of the oil is its ability to flow. There are single-viscosity oil and multi-viscosity oil. The vehicles today use multi-viscosity oils as they are more easy flowing and thin. You can find out the viscosity of your oil through the viscosity chart.

What are oil classification codes?

Every motor oil comes with a starburst symbol on the outside of the container which means that the oil meets the requirements of the current engine protection regulations. The classification codes also assure the fuel economy requirements of the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC), which is a joint organization of the US and Japanese automobile manufacturers.

Using these factors, you can use the right type of oil that your car needs. Here are the types of available engine oils that you can get.

Premium conventional oil

This is the most commonly used standard car oil, which is offered by all the leading brands under different viscosity levels. The car manufacturers usually recommend 5W-20 or 5W-30 for lower temperature regions and the 10W-30 for hotter places. Manufacturers suggest this oil for almost every regular road vehicle. It is recommended that you should change the engine oil at least twice a year.

Full synthetic oil

This oil is specially made for high-tech vehicles as the car components of such cars are full of synthetics. These oils need to clear certain quality tests to assure that they can provide a long-lasting performance of the vehicles. These oils can be expensive but are more effective at extreme temperatures.

Synthetic blend oil

This oil type is a mix of synthetic oil and organic oil which is formulated to provide protection for heavier loads and high temperatures. They are less volatile to extreme temperatures and evaporate less, which assures great fuel efficiency and durability. They are popular among heavy-duty vehicles which carry heavy loads.

Higher-Mileage oil

This type of oil is used for engines which have grown old, and the mileage of the engine is affected by the age of usage. It can improve the fuel economy of the vehicles and keep the old engines running smoothly while keeping low temperature.
